my sister's keeper

"Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate - a life and a role she has never challenged ...until now."

that was the summary at the back of the book i'm reading now. this novel was written by jodi picoult. when i first read the summary, i just knew that this is one of the book worth to read and to be listed in my book collections. i heard that they are planning to put this book into a movie. anyway, i'm not gonna talk about the movie now.

so, anna is a thirteen years old girl who happens to have a very sick sister. at the very begining of the story, jodi made us see what anna actually thinks ..on how she was conceived and why. no, she's not talking about the sex and whatever, but she just want us to understand the reason behind it. because as you already know ..anna, after all, is a designed baby.

her parents went to these doctors to "design" her so that she will be the perfect donor for her sister, kate. and siblings are the closest and the perfect donor if you ever get sick. but during those years, she feels like she's - not forced - but she's never been asked ..as simple as that. what she really wants deep down inside, is to be acknowledged as a human being, as a teenager and as a daughter instead of "just" an organ donor to her sister. she, for once, just want to stand up on her own feet than letting someone (or rather, her parents) tell her what to do.

when she decided to file a complaint to the court against her parents, that's when the family started to fall apart. the conflicts (moral and emotion) between each individuals are perfectly written by jodi. she made me feel what they feel and think what they think. it feels so real to me and made me cried ..literally. but it's not always sad as you might think this book is. jodi is so smart NOT to make this book such a tearjerker. she sometimes put in some silly thoughts of the character which made them ..human-ish, if you know what i mean.

i must admit that i wasn't expecting to read this book not until i have finished my previous one. but somehow, i just couldn't take my eyes of the book and finally decided to read it right away. i like this book and if you like to read the emotional-kind-of book, this is a must read. however, i feel a bit dissapointed in the end. i actually thought that jodi could make a better ending than this one. it is soo sad and made me feel incomplete ..somehow, depressed me. a good book though ..something to remind us that communication and understanding are really needed in every relationships.

hope you find this review helpful ..
